FORUM 2007 :: Volyn Resource Center

“Forum of sustainable development” took place in Rivne on the 18^th May 2007. The ways and perspectives in the activities directed towards local community development were discussed. Also considered were the experiences on implementation of sustainable development methods by Polish and Ukrainian organizations and projects realization, directed to make local communities more active.

Forum participants were deputies from oblast, city, district and village councils, representatives from oblast and district administrations, experts on local self-government development, representatives from international donor and investing funds, public activists and journalists.

The experiences with elaboration and implementation of Strategies for sustainable development in Ukraine’s communities were presented during the Forum (Vasyl Kashevskyi, Volyn Resource Center). The forum also discussed modern challenges and opportunities for communities in investment involvement (Ruslan Svirskyi, „InvestinRivne”) and presented the experiences in community activation to participation in local problems solution (Oleksiy Goretskyi, RONGO „Committee of Voters of Ukraine ”). Volodymyr Kondrachuk, European commission projects coordinator in Ukraine, presented the grant program “Local development oriented on the community” to forum’s participants.

Mr. Valdemar Hmelewskij invited to the Forum a special guest from Poland, „First Warsaw Agenda 21” president, who told about Polish experience in sustainable development programs implementation.

In addition to the plenary meeting, participants worked in four sections – where questions focused on ecological, economic and social aspects of local development were discussed. Separately, the participants worked a section important to the municipal innovations - transparent management (according to international standards of quality ISO 9001).

In summation of the Forum outputs, all present agreed that new methods for sustainable development implementation and local community activation are necessary processes for Ukraine, which would help our State become a valuable member within the European Union, as well as the world community. They are also necessary for Ukrainians to become real masters on their own land. Therefore, the experiences gained need to be not only popularized, but also put into action by state power, enterprise organizations and public associations.

Forum of Sustainable development organized on the initiative of Volyn Resource Center and RONGO „Committee of Voters of Ukraine,” in cooperation with Rivne Oblast Council, with the support of British Council in Ukraine and Stephan Batoria Foundation.
